Anybody who has read my column is all too familiar with the above phrase. I remember sitting in Dewick one day listening to nearby students discuss the future of my major. They jokingly placed bets as to whether I would major in English, Philosophy, or something more arbitrary, like Women’s Studies.
Mike Snyder, LA ’09, is actually majoring in this. Surprised? At a school where the most popular anticipated major among incoming students is International Relations (often combined as a double major with Economics or a foreign language), it seems counter-intuitive that I would pick something so close to home.
And when I say close to home, I mean it. All three AS courses I have taken have delved deeply into the realm of identity and the self, despite their wildly differing subject matters. By deconstructing the “American Experience” through the lenses of different institutions and cultures, initiating uncomfortable yet important dialogue with classmates of different backgrounds, and collaborating with others to form a contextual basis for understanding, these truly interdisciplinary courses have helped me to grow and understand myself (and others) far more than any science or humanities course can claim to.
Here’s a snapshot of the syllabus of an AS course I’m in right now, "Viewing African American Dance" (a deceptively bland title):
"Viewing African American Dance” models an unusual approach to dance history topics, placing them side by side with biology/medical information in the service of an overarching framework. To explain, dance is the vehicle through which inequality is considered, and science information (as well as some social history in class lectures) is one way we can understand how and possibly why a climate for racism has persisted in the US. The resulting contextualization of African American choreography occurs within an evolving system where inequality was enforced in the past, and equality continues to be a dream for many…
To understand the individual elements of the course, imagine African American dance as a mosaic comprised of many pieces of tile. Among these are science/medicine, social and legal history, sports, socioeconomic class, and other broad domains. We will examine both social history and science pieces to gain a particular impression of the African American dance mosaic of the 20th century. Along the way you will read, view video, discuss, write, and report; at times, you will move, work in groups, and take a leadership role as you assemble the pieces of a mosaic in your own way.
Read that aloud to your roommate. Doesn’t it make you sound intelligent? It should also make you realize how much more you have to learn about the Americas, your relationship to it, and your role in it. I'd like to think that AS operates on the common sense principle that before you can know people in regions ten thousand miles away, you need to know your neighbor--and yourself--first. Maybe hold off on the IR a little while longer, eh?

I think majors are stupid. They point you toward a direction, but do they have to dictate your career choice--and more importantly, should they? Let me give you an example: Martin Luther King majored in sociology.My point is, your major is inconsequential to what you might later do. I think you should take as many courses across disciplines as possible. How about having a specialty in 5 areas, not just 1. Is that so radical? I think this majoring this is over-rated. Do you agree?

Matt, I agree with you. I think the whole point of a liberal arts education is to dabble in different subjects (including the unfamiliar), be well-rounded but curious, and be a critical thinker. Instead, you have too many people at Tufts who are pre-professional, who know their major a day after freshman orientation, and have plotted out each of their 34 credits until their graduation. They also use high school AP credits to get out of a lot of the distribution requirements.
It's frustrating to me. Fewer and fewer freshmen I talk to arrive here with an exploratory nature or non-cemented concepts about their interests and themselves. For them, college is a means to an end.

Wow, you sound defeatest, but I agree. As a transfer sophomore I can see, even here, at this great institution, swarms of people who have no curiosity what so ever!!! Thats's the underpinning of everything. People are not risk-takers(well, only at parties, not in expanding their intellectual baseline.) I hate to sound cynical. I think Tufts could work to foster/develope--whatever--a more intellectually engaged student body, but at some level it is up to the students. I will use the following analogy: It is like having a platter piled with gourmet, hand-dipped, coconut-suffused, Brazilian chocolates and having a kid pass them up, go into a nearby store and buy a factory-pumped, chemicale-enhanced chocolate bar: colorless, odorless and tasteless. Sorry, that was long winded, and my spelling is going to hell..I'm tired.

Have you taken a non-introductory psychology course?
Most American Studies and all Comparative Religion courses are under humanities, not social sciences. I took Asian America, an American Studies course, and we didn't read about or conduct any scientific research.
I think it's good for society that some people focus and become experts at one subject, while others explore and become interdisciplinary. Sciences and engineering require not only thinking critically but also doing math and learning lots of facts that build upon other facts, so there's not as much time to study other things.
